Medicine on Country lampshade

“Medicine Country’ – A work about caring for, healing and protecting Country. Country sustains our lives in every aspect – spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. We sing, celebrate and dance about Country. This work symbolises the variety of traditional food and medicine sources such as various native plants, grains, fruits, vegetables and spices on Country. Through a complex system of land management using fire, the life cycles of native plants, farming and agricultural techniques ensured plentiful wildlife and plant sources. First Nations peoples are accountable to Country and we must ensu it is protected and passed on to future generations. Country is our mother, it sustains us and gives us sense of belonging.”

Holly Sanders is a proud Bundjalung woman from NSW North Coast, and currently lives and works on Yuin Country in NSW’s South Coast. Holly is a teacher and contemporary Aboriginal Artist. Her art is a reflection of her connection to Country; the land, sky, and the sea.
